VOLUNTEERING

Our cat clinics always need volunteers!

Information about volunteering

Picture
Gili Cats of Gili is a project helping the huge cat population at Gili Islands, Indonesia.

The islands are full of cats and there are lots of health problems among them.  Breeding is out of control, and as much as we all love kittens, there are too many. There is cat flu, feline panleukopenia, worms, skin, ear and eye infections, horse carts going too fast and running over cats etc.

In co-operation with Jakarta Animal Aid Network and Gili Eco Trust we organize big, free cat clinics 2-4 times a year. During these clinics cats are being neutered/spayed and are treated for any other medical issues they might have. Occasionally, our vets treat other animals too. During our previous clinics we've also treated rabbits, goats, cows, horses, a snake and a monkey!

We always need experienced volunteer vets and vet nurses during these clinics. We will offer free accommodation for the vet volunteers and vet nurses for the clinic days. Other costs, such as travel and food, everyone pays themselves.

Outside these big spay/neuter clinics we do not have much ongoing, but in case you are coming here for a holiday, and are a vet, please let us know. We always have patients in our cat hospital, who need veterinary care.

Check the dates for our next cat clinic here! Sign up for our Meowsletters to receive information as soon as we have new clinic dates set and start looking for volunteer vet team!

Veterinarians needed!

We need volunteer veterinarians mostly during our cat clinics. Vets need to be experienced and have to be able to work without supervision. Be prepared for some busy, long days, especially in the beginning of the clinic.

Check the next clinic dates on our News-page. Email us as soon as you see we have started to look for the vet team for our next clinic (the vet positions get filled very quickly!)

Veterinary students

Yes, we do welcome veterinary students to assist on the clinics, too! But that always depends whether we have enough experienced vets already.

If you are still studying and come to volunteer, please note that you may not be able to work in the operating room much, or you may need to work as an assistant or a vet nurse most of the time. We are sometimes very busy and the vets just do not have time to supervise less experienced vets or students.

Unfortunately, we cannot host veterinary student groups who want to come here to learn. The spaces where we work are sometimes really small, and there is just not room for any extra people to hang around.

Other help needed

If you are at the island during the big clinics, please consider spending a day or two assisting us at the clinics. We always need animal friendly people to help us catch the cats and look after the cats when they are waking up after the operation. Just show up when the clinic is open to see what we need help with! Follow this website and our Facebook-page for more information.

Unfortunately outside the big cat clinics we do not have much ongoing, or at least not much where an  occasional visitor could help much. But you can always come visit our cat shop and check if there is some small tasks we could use help with! And of course check out our "How to help"-page to see other ways to help our island cats.

On the other hand: if you live on Gili islands or stay long term, and would like to get involved, have time for helping cats every now and then, and are a person who gets things done and delivers what is promised: please, please, PLEASE contact us.

If you have any questions about volunteering on our cat clinics, please contact us!
